Sunday, 10/26 ... uh ... I mean Saturday, 10/25

Saturday I'm going to the St. Johnsbury Academy/Lyndon Institute football game, one of the oldest high-school football rivalries in the US (104 years old this year). The current series standing is at 57 (St. J.) to 40 w/ 6 ties.

Sunday I'm going to hit Moosilauke. Note the current (Tuesday night) weather warning:

"...WITH 1 TO 3 INCHES OF SNOW POSSIBLE ABOVE 1000 FEET IN
THE ADIRONDACKS AND UP TO AN INCH OF SNOW POSSIBLE IN VERMONT
ABOVE 1000 FEET BY WEDNESDAY MORNING."
[Update: 10/22] It looks like Saturday is going to be the nicer day, so Spanky and I will probably be heading out to do "The Moose" on Saturday.

[Update: 10/24] Oy! The rain has moved to Saturday afternoon and night, with Sunday being the more pleasant (with wet trails). Stay tuned if you plan on heading out.

[Update: 10/25] Moosilauke for Dan & Spanky and The Bad Boy for tMail & the PM.

Mutha's Trip Report (Pics Here):
Spanky and I took the Asquam Ridge trail up, and the CarriageRd/Snapper trails down. We actually tried to take the Gorge Trail down, but couldn't find it. The weather was nice all the way up, but the summit was HOWLING, cold and very low visibility. I can't wait to hear from tMail & the PM. If Moosilauke was rough, the Bad Boy must've been High Adventure! We had snow, although not really more than an inch or two. But on the summit, there were knee-deep drifts on the trail!

See pic at right for some excellent windblown ears (sorry about the full mouth, but we were splitting a sandwich).

This was 46 (for my second round of 48's) and the plan is to hit Cabot & Waumbek next weekend for both tMail's and my final 47 & 48's. We're psyched.

The PM's Trip Report (tMail's Pics Here, the PM's pics Here)

Bad Boy... well, sort of. We hiked up into Tucks (I had never been on the trail), onto the ridge, and then opted to forego the summit for a longer descent down Boott Spur. There were a TON of people out - mostly French - and we saw the storm start to roll in around 11:30am. We said "F the summit." Turns out we made the right call!

The wind picked up, the clouds enveloped the ridge, and we experienced some sweet, raw fall weather!

Highlights -
1) A German man asking us if we had seen his lost friend. Yeah...
2) Amy admitting to having anxiety attacks due to high winds.
3) I didn't forget my boots or shit my pants this hike.

On a side note, my buddy from work (Scott Lindblom) was up on the mountain with 3 of his friends and he texted us around 5:30pm saying they left at 8:20am, summited via Boott Spur, and then had a 5hr descent via Lion's Head due to one guy spraining his ankle. I can't imagine the descent in the pouring rain and winds. I'll get the full story on Monday!

Added note from tMail:
PM hit the nail on the head with the trip report...

1. Be on the look out for Simon he is missing he could be on Jefferson thinking it is Bad Boy
2. There must be 20 french teenage girls that experience hypothermia
3. Banjo and Baja are great to spend the day with.

  1. Well folks the setting has been set:

The big day is November 1st for Tmail to hopefully complete the 48 with an all out Tet Offensive on Cabot and Waumbek I am not sure what could stop me other than Rhino Tranquilizer or the 2nd coming of Jim Morrison...

The big story is that 2 years ago I started this journey with Mutha and PM when we did Cannon, the Cannon balls, and N and S Kinsman.

The even BIGGER story is that once Mutha hits the Moose and then hopefully tags Cabot and Waumbek with me he will have completed another 48, (96 F'n peaks) mind blowing.

MD has November 1st marked on his Yahoo calendar and declared that he is in.

MPM and G$$$ are on standby - "This is the equivalent of one of Lisa's or Amy's girlfriends getting engaged" (use that line see if it works)

I am staying in glorious Muthaville on that weekend getting there for Halloween night to stick needles in apples.

Candy to be handed out on Waumbek and Cabot...maybe the old man will be there in costume!!!

More details to follow in the coming week.

  2. Wow, never even thought about MZ's second go-round...and not to count the chickens before they hatch...but it's time for M-Z to start thinking about the winter 48...

Once again I'm not available for the Kamikaze Kilkenny Knockdown since Lisa is out of town that weekend. Maybe EZ-E and I will just have to settle on going cougar hunting to collect(eye) candy.

  3. Knock 'em down... I will likley be in NYC on the 1st - going into the Marathon to watch and cheer for Amy's brother.

  4. Bad Boy?

Kinda wish I had known as there's nothing on my plate tomorrow except leaf raking and I'm still wanting to hit the Huntington Ravine Trail but it looks it'll be a bit to wet from tonights rain.

Have fun..be safe..and all that other stuff.

  8. I'm glad you didn't tag the summit. I was about 1400ft lower than you guys and it was pretty sketchy. I had enough gear in my pack, but the winds were so high I couldn't hear, and the clouds so thick I couldn't see more than about 50yards. And that big, broad summit was hard to navigate. The cold rain started as soon as we were back in the car.

  9. I almost forgot to mention another highlight of the day which was Tim's spot on Timothy Treadwell (Grizzly Man) impression! It was quite amusing to hear TMail's interpretation of our day in the "Grizzly Maze!"

  10. sounds another outing missed....I spent my Saturday morning on another spirited 60 mile ride followed by 5 hours at the town fall festival, including towing EZ-E around town in his fireman's costume for the kiddie parade, and his 15 sec of fame as he is interviewed by a local columnist. The closest I got to any wildlife was keeping Evan trying to mount and ride a 20 year old turtle...

For the your run at Cabot and Waumbek this weekend...what is your plan? N to S or S to N? Start time?

  11. G-$$$ the planned assault so far is a North to South...Mill Brook Road take Unknown Pond Trail to Kilkenny then ride that baby all teh way to Waumbek and Starr King for the hell of it...is Lisa still out of Town?
