Fri/Sat/Sun (12/19, 12/20, 12/21)

The PM and tMail are planning a big shindig for Friday. My last day of classes is Friday so it'll be either Sat or Sun for MD and me. g-$$$ might be able to make any of the three, so we'll leave this post out here for ideas/plans/etc. and see how things evolve over the next day or two.

We've got a winter weather advisory posted for tomorrow. It's only 3-5 inches in Danville, but apparently it'll all come down between 10:00am and 10:15am.

[Update 12/20, 1pm] Well, it was just too much to get out this morning. tMail would've crawled to NH if he had to. MD and mutha were just too beat to manage it. We have a day of rest and shoveling the white powerdy yum-yum and now tMail is starting the drumbeat for going hiking tomorrow in the middle of a winter storm. Hmmm, sounds somehow appealing....

Stay tuned.

[Update 12/20, 5pm] It's just not gonna happen. We've got so much snow in the forecast for Sunday that tMail and I called it off until next weekend. We're available Fri/Sat/Sun and hope to take advantage of these enormously snowy conditions on one of those days. This should be great fun.

  1. Saturday is my first preference, assuming decent travel on the roads. Where we all headed??

  2. Maddog, count me in for Saturday. The destination is totally open. If you have any preferences, post them here in the comments section. In the mood for exposure? Want some views? Want a long day out w/ complicated footing? You name it!

  6. I need to be back at a reasonable time and would prefer something "dog friendly" so that Riley can attend.

    Dog Friendly Possibilities include:
    Moosilaucke
    Sandwich Dome
Tecumseh (w/descent via sleds on the ski hill!!!)
    Graylock (in MA)

    Non-dog friendly:
Monadnock (because I've never done it)
Any Franconia ridge trail, including the backside of Flume via teh rail bed
    The Hancocks

What the weather Gods are saying for Boston area -
... WINTER STORM WATCH IN EFFECT FROM FRIDAY MORNING THROUGH LATE FRIDAY NIGHT...

THE NATIONAL WEATHER SERVICE IN TAUNTON HAS ISSUED A WINTER STORM WATCH... WHICH IS IN EFFECT FROM FRIDAY MORNING THROUGH LATE FRIDAY NIGHT.

THE WINTER STORM WATCH IS IN EFFECT FOR ALL OF SOUTHERN NEW ENGLAND.

SNOW IS EXPECTED TO DEVELOP FROM WEST TO EAST BETWEEN 8 AM AND NOON ON FRIDAY. THE SNOW IS EXPECTED TO BECOME HEAVY DURING THE AFTERNOON... WITH THE POTENTIAL FOR SNOWFALL RATES OF 1 TO 2 INCHES PER HOUR. THE FRIDAY EVENING RUSH HOUR MAY BE QUITE MESSY WITH HEAVY SNOW STILL FALLING. THE SNOW SHOULD TAPER TO SNOW SHOWERS ACROSS THE INTERIOR DURING THE EVENING HOURS... BUT THE STEADY SNOW WILL LIKELY CONTINUE ALONG THE COAST WELL INTO THE NIGHT.

AT THIS TIME... IT APPEARS THAT THE HEAVIEST SNOW WILL FALL SOUTH OF THE MASSACHUSETTS TURNPIKE AND PARTICULARLY ON THE SOUTH COAST. THE POTENTIAL DOES EXIST FOR SOME LOCATIONS TO SEE UP TO A FOOT OF SNOW... WITH THE HIGHEST PROBABILITY ALONG THE SOUTH COAST.

    And the NH Gods -
Cloudy with snow in the afternoon and night
    Highs: around 10°F
    Lows: around 0°F

Looks like heading North is good, coming South will be bad!

  7. PM we should stay the hell out of MA it is going to be ugly...I vote Tecumseh, Moose or Osceola...

Garfield could be an option as well...

  9. we got our snow - maybe 5 inches. the snowbanks along the driveway are building rapidly. too bad i roasted the drive best on the snowblower last friday during the 5 inches of slush debacle. gotta replace that belt.

no snow up here in the forecast other than your basic light, wintery sort of snowy kind of days that add 1/2 inch per day.

  10. any flatlanders coming north saturday or you guys going to be in recovery mode?

mutha, if it turns out to be just you and me, howz about something in the greens, on the LT, mansfield?

  11. maddog, count me in for a green adventure. we can also go out sunday if that's better for you.

  12. Tomorrow NH:

As the low draws near tonight, wind speeds will max out near hurricane force, which, combined with cold temperatures, will create wind chills that warrant extreme caution. The stay of the low will be quite fleeting as well, as its effects will dwindle by early tomorrow, perhaps again making way for the sun to peak through as much drier air is wrapped in behind the system.

    Tomorrow Boston area per NOAA:

SNOW IS EXPECTED TO DEVELOP FROM WEST TO EAST LATE FRIDAY MORNING OR
EARLY AFTERNOON. THE SNOW IS EXPECTED TO BECOME HEAVY NOT TOO LONG
AFTER ONSET. THE POTENTIAL EXISTS FOR SNOWFALL RATES OF 1 TO 2
INCHES PER HOUR FRIDAY AFTERNOON AND EVENING. ROADS DURING THE FRIDAY
AFTERNOON AND EVENING RUSH HOUR WILL LIKELY BE SNOW COVERED AND
    TREACHEROUS.

NH looks like bitter cold...I am up for anything just let me know...

  13. After looking at the weather for NH and MA for tomorrow, I have curled up in the fetal position and am whimpering...

In reality... wait, that is reality

I looked at the maps and either a Kinsman or Sandwich poke look pretty good due to the dog friendliness of them and the location. However, the fact that we will be hitting the worst of the drive home does not exicite me. Sitting in "treacherous" driving conditions with a bunch of yahoos is not appealing after a nice day out!

Couple this with my fighting a head cold of some sort for the past few days and I'm quickly wavering.

G$ and TMail, give me a call to discuss your level of desire to get up and out. I do have to be home on Fri night (i.e. can't crash at G$'s if the roads in MA are really that bad.)

Yes, I am officially on the hairy edge of the fence - where all of the v-holes hang out.

  14. PM/tmail...I'm back on the fence as well....if the forecast holds or worsens I may have to remain home since they might just cancel daycare and mrs g-$$$ has no leeway during peak fuel season for personal time off.... if they close his daycare mid-day and I'm away, I'll be in deep doo-doo.

if all goes well and I can go, my preference is to get back sooner than later if not to have to deal with storm related traffic delays...and I'm sure you guys do too. I'm okay with kinsman, sandwich...or what about throwing another in the mix...how about cardigan? it's barely a 3k peak but it's supposedly got great views and far enough south that we can get back to civilization in no time (plus I'd like to scope out the trails in anticpation of doing some backvountry skiing there one of these days).

i'll probably hold off a decision to go later today/tonight.

  16. if you yahoos end up bailing out, there's always sat/sun. maddog and i will probably have huge adventure planned in the Greens for saturday, but anything's possible.

  17. Franconia forecast -
Friday: Snow likely, mainly after 1pm. Mostly cloudy, with a high near 17. North wind between 6 and 8 mph. Chance of precipitation is 60%. New snow accumulation of 1 to 3 inches possible.

    Portsmouth -
Friday: Snow, mainly after 1pm. High near 28. Blustery, with a north wind 8 to 11 mph increasing to between 17 and 20 mph. Chance of precipitation is 100%. New snow accumulation of 3 to 5 inches possible.

    Franklin, MA -
Still the hell weather previously posted.

I'm leaning towards calling "baggage" and hnkering down for tomorrow with a post-storm adventure in either MA or VT on Sat (if my realtives don't come)

  18. totally unrelated to this thread...have i mentioned how this blog page thrills me? two ways: first and most importantly, the content and contributors. second, it's got to be the fastest loading page ever served off the net, at least of anything i usually hit. it's probably pure HTML (no java) and the gifs are as small as peas. mutha can probably shed some light on the underlying technologies, we can save it for trail-talk.
