Hell Brook: I'm Not Kidding
Depending on who's available, I'm heading up to Hell Brook. I keep saying that, but this time I mean it. Last Saturday's trek up Sandwich Dome reminded me I need to get in snowshoe shape for ... uh ... Hell Brook, I guess. How better to train! If the snowboarders and skiers have packed out trails then it can be done in crampons but we won't know until we get there.
School's out this week, so I have 3 weeks where I can do stuff mid-week, which will include skiing where there are lifts. I don't mind hiking up with my skis, but climbing 1,800ft and skiing down is pretty much it. I may do some backcountry exploring on skis if anyone is interested, but bear in mind I keep it pretty low-key.
The forecast for Sunday is freezing rain so I'd like to get out Saturday. Thursday (12/19) we're forecast for 3-8in around here, up to 10 or more in central NH.
[Update 12/21: Final Plan]
We're heading up Hell Brook on Saturday (12/22) and coming down the LT. So far, it's MD, the PM and me. Conditions: unknown. Equipment: unknown. Likelihood of failure: unknown.
I'm willing to give ol HB a go on Saturday. Let's watch the weather. Also, let's put CBury on the calendar for the following weekend. Mid-week jaunts are not possible just yet.

tMail, I await. but don't get me wrong - Hell Brook should be done at least twice in the winter. once so it can be done, and once so it can't be done. we'll go again when the snow is deeper so we can REALLY not make it. maddog and I were CHEST DEEP and it was steeper than the north slide.
ReplyDeletemaddog! hb on saturday? you just told tmail that you'd be joining him on the bunny hills! holy crap.
ReplyDeletei've got craftsbury on the calendar for 12/29.
that's why he's called maddog.....
ReplyDeleteI'm in for Saturday. What time do you want to meet and where? I assume we have to park on the road or at the ski area to then walk up the road to the trailhead?
ReplyDeleteI'll be prepared for hell or high water...
(Long Trail on descent?)
pretty sure i will have to miss out on this one....but damn I need to pay homeage to the Green Mts sooner or later or they might spite me out of jealousy.
ReplyDeleteWTF...whats up with the blog changes???? I was okay witht eh font but that logo? Ixnay on tmail's suggestion on making the blog logo our defacto patch!
buncha wise-asses.
ReplyDeletePM, are you driving up from south of the border or from the Northfieldish area (Sector N)?
MD has the shortest drive. The parking area is just past the entrance to the Stowe Mtn/Spruce Peak ski resort. About 100yds past is where they stop plowing and there is a nice huge parking area cleared. We'll have to walk up to the trailhead, but if we come down the LT we'll end up right near the cars.
If you (PM) have the farthest distance, you pick the time. For a meeting place, there are a number of choices. MD likes a place called ... uh ... MD, what's it called? The bakery/cafe/specialty food shop?
We can always meet somewhere first, like the mobil station just north of the Rte 89 exit on 100.
i just got both tats done in a local india shop really clean place too...
ReplyDeleteI can smell the mountains I can't wait....
last day in India...
tmail
Coming from Northfield to Waterbury...
ReplyDeleteI can be at the Mobil, just North on Rte 100/I89 exit at 7AM or if we want a bit later start, to get the weather/temps on our side then I'd propose 8AM.
Psyched.
Please e-mail my sensata.com accout with final details because I am leaving tomorrow morning and will have limited access to the blog.
Life is Crap.
ReplyDeleteI will be with you guys in spirit. PM will explain to you at the trailhead. Have a great time boys, and Maddog go easy on the fellas.
Great Caesar's Ghost, g-$$$! I'm sure we'll hear it all tomorrow, but if what they say is true, that what doesn't kill you makes you stronger, then it sounds like you'll be lifting freight trains and wrestling sequoia into piles of toothpicks. Hang in there, friend. I have no money and I'm not emotionally prepared to give you a kidney, but mi casa, su casa.
ReplyDeletejeezum g-$$$ what have i missed?. mountain santa will be translating tomorrow i guess.
