Thursday's Great Adventure

tMail and I have started the warmup to Spungie Day (Jan 3/4). We're heading out on Thursday, January 1st and are contemplating some routes. The primary candidate is to revisit that hell they tMail In The Mist
call Edmands Col. The route is probably up over the Castles, hit Jefferson, navigate the Col, tag Adams (or not) and descend via The Gray Knob.

For historical reference, this was the ill-fated trek where tMail and I turned around just north of the Col and headed back down the Castles while the PM and g-$$$ did the same thing from the Madison side of the range.

Picture Gallery from that trek is here.

  1. Observations from the map and memory...

It is a long day above treeline and the going is slow over the castles need to dress warm...

If we get to Edmands Col and need to bail I assume it is down Ravine Trail if we can find it...do you think any issues with stream crossings? I checked VFTT and nobody has posted anything from the Northern Presi's...If no issues we can bail out down Ravine trail...IF and BIG IF we get to Adams is it Lowes straight down?

I will have a bivy sac, two headlamps and batteries with me as FYI...I always do but just wanted to let everyone know...

  2. I recall that the first stream crossing over the isreal river is a brute... have to walk up and down the bank to find a way across.

Not sure about Castle Ravine Trail - never tried to find it before.

Chances are, since the forecast for Thursday looks good, we'll be able to make it to Lowe's Path. I'll have extra headlamp batteries too.

  3. Will we want to spot two cars like last time?

  4. Very Simple Hat and Gloves:

    Per NOAA

A WIND CHILL ADVISORY MEANS THAT VERY COLD AIR AND STRONG WINDS
WILL COMBINE TO GENERATE LOW WIND CHILLS. THIS WILL RESULT IN
FROST BITE AND LEAD TO HYPOTHERMIA IF PRECAUTIONS ARE NOT TAKEN.
IF YOU MUST VENTURE OUTDOORS...MAKE SURE YOU WEAR A HAT AND
    GLOVES.

  7. If it ever comes down to it, I'll bomb Cranston first.

  8. Darwin was right and I'm glad the boys got out relatively unscathed but I'm sure those guys, or their parents, will end up paying given how the cost of rescues is a hot button these days on the news.

I'm a little surprised the Conservation Officers had to rent winter boots. You'd think that'd be part of their minimum gear for the job. Well if the kids end up paying, then money should be allocated for boots then!
