Mount Tripyramid(s)?

Well, the PM has suggested it, and I'll go along with the idea because I'm a follower. We've got rain and ice in the forecast, so that's a good sign. If there are tigers with knives and warrior trolls with poisoned arrows it may spice things up. So what's the deal, PM? Saturday?

  1. It's not ideal but I can swing Saturday if we NEED to get the Tri's out of the way!!! I wouldn't mind testing out just how sharp my "tampon" spikes are and seeing how the slides differ now from the warmer months. Plus, this would be good Bamforth training... which is key to survival for the 23rd!

  2. "Not ideal"?? I thought this was your idea. So what would be "ideal" (other than a chocolyptic puddingocolyps grudge-match no-holds-barred nude wrestling w/ Scarlett Johansson)?

  3. Not ideal in the sense that I am in Tim's boat with the lady... shop, wrap, and Christmas is the near term focus. With that said, she has okayed the trip but with a serious Scrooge face on!!! (Not to mention her added displeasure at my suggesting she skip the Bamforth adventure due to the high probability of misery!!!)

I woudl actually really like to get out and get some more ups in prior to Bamforth (and the Bad Boy.) So, I will endure my marital pain for this!!!!

  4. Since I'm not going I can talk all I want. I still would be most concerned with the footing on the slabs given what is probably pretty mixed conditions. I'd bring an axe since there's probably been a few good melt/refreeze cycles over the past week. You could always bypass the slicker North slide and take Scaur? Ridge Tr. and then come down the South Slide.

Personally I'd wait another month or so until decent snow/ice conditions and x-c ski up to the base, front-point up the north slide, bag the peaks and glissade down the south, and then ski out.

And PM, Treadmill is welcome to join me and mad dog at the back of the pack on Banforth. I'm fully expecting the crazy canine to grow quite bored of my conversation right away and follow his natural instinct as leader of the pack...that and my fat arse will need company.

  5. waiting for the tri's to get packed in w/ ice and snow sounds fun. i wouldn't mind doing it twice, although doing something else on saturday works for me as well. gotta run to a meeting - back tonight or tomorrow.

  6. PM I am still free on Sunday was planning on training with Spungie in Blue Hills but if anyone can shoot up North I am game for it. Regarding the 23rd of December, I spoke to Spungie and I am going to do something with him which has not yet been determined. There is probably no way I could make it back to RI on Saturday after the climb......I will keep you guys posted on the 23rd plans with Spungie and crew......

  7. Saturday... the wife already gave me the go ahead (she is working) so I am planning SOMETHING for that day.

MuthaZ, what do you think? If not the Tri's then what peaks do you still have on your list of love? (I'm in for the Tri's and wouldn't mind the potantial butt puckering ascent up the N.Slide!!!)

  10. Have fun and be safe if you go hit the Tri's but the lack of TR's on VFTT (none since Oct) and this little excerpt from Mohammed's site about the Tri's would make me think twice.

.........Many will find the North Slide, with its steep rock slabs and exposure, unappealing at all times. All should avoid it when wet or icy.......

Hell, maybe I'm just becoming a wuss...Gaynerd, you need any help folding panties this weekend?

  11. PM, I've only got the tris, hancocks and tecumseh left - all of which i consider 'late winter' weather hikes (except tecumseh - our ceremonial final peak in June). The weather for saturday is looking nice ("nice" = "not raining").

In general, my sentiments tend to echo those expressed by g-$$$ but i also don't mind wasting a hike finding that we can't actually manage the north slide. I've never seen the north slide trail so it's going to have to be your call. If our goal is a to have a strong 'training' hike (in elev gain and distance) let's be conservative and either ascend via Scaur Ridge or do a different hike. If you want to experiment and take a chance on it being more of an ass-pucker than a calorie burner, we can try the north slide.

  12. North slide may = scars
Scaur Ridge may = sore legs

Let's err on the side of caution and save the slide for later winter when we know there's some purchase with snow/ice mix. There are a few steep sections that may provide that "oh shit, I hope my crampons are sharp" sensation!

Scaur ridge - via livermore, pine bend brook, or the livermore trail?

I don't have my fancy milage map handy (SOB!)

  13. Meet at the Campton/Waterville Valley Ski Resport exit (#29 I think) on Sat AM at what time... 7:30am? There is a gas station if you go right off the exit (towards Waterville Valley Ski Resort.) You want to meet there? Do you know what I am talking about?

  14. i haven't looked at a map, but it's the exit for rte 49 (Campton, NH) i think. exit 28 sounds right. 7:30am at the gas station on the right. i've never taken that exit (or at least i don't recall ever taking it) so i'm hoping that the first gas station on the right after you turn onto rte 49 is unambiguous.

i don't think i'll have Sue's cell phone w/ me (she has some traveling to do this weekend)

cool. i'm psyched. i'll probably bring stabilicers and crampons and a bag of kitty litter.

  15. I'm definitely jealous but we got some mountains to climb this weekend....I got a brief appt with our financial advisor to make sure I keep my nickname and then we're off to the hospital in Fitchburg so that Lisa can say goodbye to her dad as they take him off life support tomorrow or Sun. It's not going to be an overly joyous weekend and although she's VERY distant from them it is still a somber situation. And I take comfort in knowing that the Bamforth is on the horizon to provide the physical suffering.

Be safe and sharpen those front points and Axe Spikes! Looking forward to MuthaZ's TR and pics on Sat night/Sun.
