The Upcoming Weekend: Bastille Day, 2007

This is just a placeholder for next weekend's plans, as they start to materialize. Anybody have a preference? Any secret desires, wishes, wants. Anyone yearning for more more more?

  1. Ok here are my most secret desires:

I want to do something this weekend I don't want to go out and go 100mph...I want to just go out at a okay pace and somewhat "just enjoy hiking" and would like it to be a long hike 6+ hours. Saturday I am available, not Sunday (spending the day with Dao on Sunday)...let me know what everyone thinks.

  2. I'm down with that. Let's start the ideas flowing. You probably don't want to drive all the way to Pinkham, right? How about somewhere closer? I'm always up for Hale/Zealand in a loop from Zealand Road. I'll post some more ideas.

  4. Crazy Idea numero Uno:

Which is a little further down from Zealand Road...and probably crazy...

Crawford path to Pierce/Eisenhower then push to the Dry River Trail (through Oakes Gulf) now the problem may be with alot of rain the river crossing could be really tough according the White Mountain Guide book. Then shoot west on Dry River Cutoff / Mizpah cutoff back to Crawford Path.

My rough estimates put it at 17 miles...

Again I am up for anything and will take any feed back, shed the light...we also have to keep an eye on weather.

    tmail...

  5. Works for me. Presumably you want to head into Oakes Gulf to add mileage, right? I don't know what the Dry River Trail is like, but I do know this about Oakes Gulf: bring bug repellant. I'll read up on it tonight or tomorrow.

  6. Tell me if this strikes you as a sign we shouldn't do this route: "When water levels are high, the few Dry River crossings that remain on this trail ... are at best difficult and can be very dangerous. At such times it is prudent not to descend into this valley ... ". I believe all the rain we've had qualifies as 'high water'.

  7. Want to do Carrigain? We could hit the Signal Ridge Trail from Sawyer River Road (not too far outside North Conway). If we loop back either through Carrigain Notch or even via the Nancy Pond Trail (hitting a spotted car just up the road) we could bang out 13 or 15 miles.

  8. MZ...I read that in the book and seeing the news this morning with all the rain probably not a wise choice but I had a back up plan for the same Mountains...

Webster Jackson Tr...to Mt. Jackson...then Mizpah Hut...east Dry River Cut Off....then Mt. Eisenhower Trail...then save the climax for the end Eisenhower / Pierce come down Crawford Path one car set up park near that Crawford Depot...what do you think? Doing it in my head looks to between 13-16 miles???

By the way I am at my desk at work with the map pinned up on the wall looking at trails...

  9. Any rain today should be minimal. I think the mountains are draining pretty well. Your original route would probably be great. If the water is high we can wade. I'm going to bring a change of socks but I learned from our Owl's Head adventure that wading isn't the worst thing that could happen. Make the call. I'm up for anything.

  10. MZ...I am fine with the original route...we can change last minute and do reverse to the leave the Big Peaks for the end....let me know what you think it is a matter of going clockwise which would be P/E first or counter clockwise dry river trail then P / E...let me know what you think...

My second pair of Vasque's arrived yesterday!
